Extended Forecast: IT Spending Survey

The weather and the economy seem to be the main topics of conversation these days.  Although we can’t control them, we do make attempts to predict them.  It sometimes appears that my local TV weatherman is right about as often as my brother-in-law, but he does come close most of the time.  So, while we take the information with a grain of salt, it is always interesting to look at economic forecasts as well.  ITtoolbox hosted an IT Spending Survey in May 2003 to get an idea of current and future spending plans of corporate IT departments.  The results are encouraging and do show a trend towards increased budgets as well as plans for new implementations.

Which technologies are companies planning to implement over the next year?  Databases were number one, with over 40% of companies indicating they are preparing for implementations and upgrades.  Combined with plans for Business Intelligence, Data Warehousing and Data Storage projects, the prospect of working with databases looks great.  Companies need individuals that can manage large data projects and the flow of information.  From designing and planning the hardware and network infrastructure, to writing tables, queries and reports, qualified people will be in demand.

Our SQL and MCDBA videos are a perfect way to get the knowledge you need to work with databases.  SQL Fundamentals/SQL 2000 Implementation and Design was added last month and is still available on a New Release price special.

More Cisco Changes

As we reported last month, Cisco is in the midst of retiring exams and they aren’t done yet.  Exam 640-607 for CCNA certification is scheduled for retirement on September 30, 2003.  You have until that date to register for the exam and, once you’ve passed, the certification is valid for 3 years.

There’s still a lot of time left to study and prepare for this exam but we’re going to help you out the best we can.  The instructor, Emilio Valdez, did a fantastic job in preparing our original CCNA package.  So good in fact, that we only have to add two new videos to map to the requirements of the new CCNA exam (640-801).  These two new videos will be free to anyone who already owns our CCNA training package and will be ready for download by the end of the month.

The changes to the CCNP Switching training videos, described in our June Newsletter, are currently being made to encompass new exam 642-811.  Additionally, we have a new CCNP video series covering Routing that is almost finished.  This new series will provide training for Building Scalable Cisco Internetworks (BSCI) and map to exam 642-801. All three of these new and updated products will be available by the end of the July 2003.  We will send out an e-mail announcement once they are ready to go, so make sure you are signed up to receive our New Release e-mails.

CBT Nuggets New Releases: Busy Summer

The changes on the Cisco certifications, the new SQL training product….. Sounds like we’ve been keeping our instructors busy?  We’re not through yet!  Also on tap this month will be Introduction to VB.NET Programming and Introduction to XML.  These programming titles will start you down the road towards Microsoft's new MCAD (Microsoft Certified Application Developer) certification as well as the MCSD for .NET.  If you're looking for a career in programming or just want to learn the concepts and tools, these videos will give you a great foundation of knowledge.

August and September will bring the much anticipated release of the Server 2003 upgrade exam training videos.  These new videos will allow you to upgrade your existing certification by preparing you for exams 70-292 and 70-296.  To upgrade your MCSA 2000 to 2003, you will need to pass the 70-292 exam and to upgrade your MCSE 2000 to 2003, you will need to pass exams 70-292 and 70-296.

We continue to get questions about whether to get an MCSA/MCSE for Windows Server 2000 or wait to take the 2003 version.  Our recommendation is to get certified for 2000 and take the upgrade exams for 2003.  This will get you certified sooner and prepare you better for working in the real world.  Most companies will not replace all of their servers with 2003 right away.  They will continue to use Server 2000 until they need to add or replace a server.  A mixed server environment is very common and those that are certified in multiple versions are in greater demand.

Exchange Server 2000 is scheduled be available in August as well.  We apologize for the delays in getting this product to you, but the demand for qualified Exchange Server personnel has made it difficult to find an instructor that wasn't busy with projects.  Exchange is used to manage e-mail distribution and it continues to grow in acceptance and popularity.  Our videos will map to Microsoft Exam 70-224 and will teach you how to install, upgrade, manage and troubleshoot Exchange Server.

And there's more to come, as we add the Citrix CCA certification to our catalog before the summer is out.  The Citrix Certified Administrator is the entry level certification from Citrix.  Citrix products are very popular with companies that have multiple locations, telecommuters or call centers.  Learn how to configure, manage and administer application deployment, SpeedScreen, the ICA client, Nfuse, security and the management console as well as troubleshooting and load balancing.
